Crowdfunding for "The Never Pay Pathway" Videos Gets a $25K Boost!
There’s nothing like a $25,000 donation to give my crowdfunding campaign a lift!
As you may recall, I’m raising money on Indiegogo to fund the production of a series of health literacy videos that are based on my book, “Never Pay the First Bill: And Other Ways to Fight the Health Care System and Win.” I'm calling the video curriculum The Never Pay Pathway, and the plan is to roll the videos out to consumers and employer sponsored health plans nationwide, starting early next year.
I set an ambitious fundraising goal - $75,000 – to pay for the graphics, animation, editing and visuals for the how-to videos, as well as a smartphone app and operational expenses. That’s a BIG goal! But I also know there’s an urgent need to equip and empower employees and patients to navigate the system. These videos can help people save hundreds or even thousands of dollars per health care encounter. And when they save, their health care plans will also save. Educating consumers can drive down health care costs!
Crowdfunding donations may be as small as $5 – and the power of crowdfunding is that even those small donations can add up to a lot. And they can be as large as $25,000 – the CHAMPION level – for individuals and organizations that want to be standard-setters.
I’m pleased to thank J.P. Farley Corporation, a benefits administration company in Westlake, Ohio, for its $25,000 donation to the campaign! That’s HUGE! The company joins an additional 36 backers who have contributed more than $32,000 so far.
I asked Jim Farley, who founded the company, to share why his company decided to CHAMPION The Never Pay Pathway videos. Jim outlined three reasons:
Jim said he didn’t want to sound like a Boy Scout, but he’s made a good living in the benefits business. “I think we need to do our part,” Jim told me. “I have an obligation to do that.”
Jim also said he has a “soft spot” for working Americans "getting shafted” by high health care costs. “There’s a sense of justice in this whole thing,” he said.
And finally, all efforts to boost the health literacy of employees have been “totally lacking,” Jim said. “No one spends any time or effort on this at all. As a result of that, no one knows what’s going on.”
Jim said his company is a third-party administrator for about 100 employers representing an estimated 50,000 employees. Once The Never Pay Pathway videos are produced, he’s going to use them to train his own employees, so they can be better advocates for members. He will also encourage the employers he works with to integrate them into their health plans, so their employees can be protected from overpaying for the health care they need.
Jim believes educating employees will have a strong return on the investment. “We could easily save 25%, and probably, if we put our minds to it, we could save 40-50%,” on health care costs, he said.
