I would strongly suggest that before paying money to hire someone to be a patient advocate on a person's behalf that you go to the agent of record or the broker that sold the policy to the employer in this case and ask their help in sorting out the situation, I help my clients on a daily basis in situations just like this one, it is what I get paid to do!

Great idea, Sharon. I am so happy to hear that you provide such great service for your clients! I do recommend that people go to their brokers, but I've seen mixed results with this. Especially with complicated cases. A broker would have had a hard time untangling this particular mess - it took many hours and a lot of expertise and administrative hassle. So in this case I definitely think a patient advocate was the way to go. Also, I've seen many cases where the brokers pass the whole thing off and don't help at all. In contrast, a patient advocate makes it their sole focus to serve that patient.
